Why? Although William Farquhar was the one who transformed Singapore from a quiet fishing village to a busy town filled with settlers, it was Raffles who placed William Farquhar in charged and thus Raffles was the person overall in charge of Singapore then. And when William Farquhar was dismissed, Raffles helped to further establish Singapore. Thus, many Singaporeans feel that Raffles is the best choice for being the actual founder of Singapore. But even though many people feel that Raffles is the founder of Singapore, Singaporeans should still remember his right hand man, William Farquhar and those who help Raffles to transform Singapore from a small fishing village to a bustling trading port. Some people also consider John Crawfurd as the founder.
