Introduction

Sir Stamford Raffles is popularly regarded and honoured as 'founder and architect of Singapore'. Many places have been named under his name. One such place is Raffles Institution. However, as much as many people think that Sir Stamford Raffles is the founder of Singapore, there are still debates about who is the founder of Singapore. Some say it was William Farquhar who is the founder while some said it was John Crawfurd. However, before we make any decisions on who is the real founder of Singapore, let us first learn about how Singapore was found in the 1819s and what problems did the British face in starting a trading settlement in Singapore, before jumping onto any conclusions.

Our group, which consists of Kai Jie, Ean, Bryan, Jovan and Ethan, are creating this website as we hope that we can help any students who visit this website to have a much better understanding of how Singapore was discovered by the British, the problems the British faced and who exactly was the founder of Singapore.

Before we move on to the topic on how British found Singapore, let's watch a short video to know more about how Sang Nila Utama found Singapore so that we can get a clear view of how ancient Singapore was found.
